This month, we feature Haneen Boraby Matt, a DIY superstar who wields stencil design patterns in fun and chic ways coordinated with well thought out color schemes.

Stenciled Living Room Feature Wall | Chez Sheik Moroccan Wall Stencil by Royal Design Studio

My living room was tired, bored and needed revamping. I’ve always dreamed of visiting Morocco and the textiles and patterns I see in the travel photos by Melanie Royals, Creative Director of Royal Design Studio, are so inspiring! So the living room kind of took on that “global chic” vibe and the Chez Sheik Moroccan Wall Stencil was a great starting point.

MEET STENCIL STAR HANEEN MATT. Haneen Matt has an art degree with a concentration in photography. “Although I have a degree in photography, I’d actually love to be the one staging and styling the photos instead of taking them. I’ve always wanted to work for a magazine and I love making things look good,” she explains. “Since I’m currently a stay at home mom to my four kids, I tend to pour my creative energy into my home. Interior design has become a major passion of mine over the years. I honestly sometimes fall asleep re-arranging furniture in my head! Since my “work” is at home, my belief is I better love what it looks like since I’m staring at these walls all day!” Royal Design Studio stencils came into play for Haneen about three years ago. “I absolutely loved the idea of pattern on the wall without the commitment of wallpaper.” Haneen launched her popular Instagram account strictly for photos of her home. “What an inspiration Instagram has proven to be! So many talented designers out there and and they’re all so full of encouragement and support for my work!” We hope you enjoy our feature of her gorgeous home and beautiful stenciled finishes, too.

What draws you to stenciling?

Pattern, pattern, pattern. I’m very naturally pulled toward mixing them. I think it’s such a great way to layer a room. I was initially drawn to stenciling because it creates such a statement. It’s definite eye candy, especially when paired with an airy gallery of mirrors and open frames. My front living room wall with the Chez Sheik Moroccan Wall Stencil and wall gallery is the first thing guests see when they walk in our home, and I’m proud of it. I have an art degree, but I’m currently home with my children, so stenciling was also a way to relive my college painting days! I like the feeling of a paintbrush in my hand.

Please share your top stenciling tip with us.

The most important step I found while stenciling, was constantly checking if the stencil was level as I moved along. Also, it’s so important to roll off excess paint before actually applying pressure to the stencil. It’s easy for paint to seep underneath if there’s too much paint on your roller. The less amount of paint to start, the better. I also always go back in when the project is complete which a small paintbrush for touch ups. The best part of stenciling is that it doesn’t have to be perfect. So don’t be intimidated! It’s fun!

I also stenciled my old childhood beds with the Chevron Wall Stencil. I just love how the patterns play off of each other. I think it’s fun to mix unexpected patterns and colors.

What would be your “dream” stencil project?

I absolutely love watching Melanie Royals’ travels on Royal Design Studio Facebook. Visiting Morocco has always been on my bucket list. The textiles and colors in her photos are a feast for the eyes, and I think my dream stencil job would be to help paint buildings on one of those trips! Beautify rooms overseas? Yes, please!
