Our Stencil Star™ series showcases our creative customer’s use of our Royal Design Studio mylar wall stencils and Modello™ custom vinyl stencils on walls, ceilings, floors, and more. This month, we travel to New York to see the beautiful work of Heather Bruno-Sears. Heather wields her creative skills with her love of stencil patterns in many of her decorative painting projects.
MEET STENCIL STAR HEATHER BRUNO-SEARS. Since 1999, Heather Bruno-Sears has specialized in hand-wrought surface design. Heather’s portfolio features a myriad of concepts for interior decor including; exquisite faux finishes, ornamental ceilings, Skimstone decorative concrete, etched and reverse gilded glass, antique mirror patinas, faux wood marquetry, heirloom painted furniture, cabinetry, moldings, murals, & works on canvas. Heather is currently renovating a circa 1814 stone schoolhouse in the Finger Lakes Region of Central New York. “It was a little historical gem near ruins. All overgrown with four crumbling walls, broken windows, a huge hole in the roof, and a dirt floor,” she muses. “Not only did I want to salvage the original Spafford Schoolhouse for sentimental reasons, I saw the potential it had to be an English cottage-style artisan retreat, studio and decorative arts showroom.”

In a little rendezvous with Heather, we tried to find out a few secrets about her passion, her dream projects and some of her favorite materials to work with. Curious to learn more? Let’s take a look!
HOW DOES STENCILING ENHANCE YOUR CREATIVE BUSINESS?
The infinite array of stencil ornament is essential to my design mission of creating ‘one-of-a-kind’ finishes. It ups the intrinsic value for a client to invest in custom, hand-wrought work if the finish is unique to their home. Often times, they enjoy witnessing the creative process unfold and are intrigued by the finish recipe and physical technique used to achieve the desired effect. It brings me great joy to provide a service to patrons which results in a beautiful reflection of their individual tastes and personality.
WHAT WOULD BE YOUR ‘DREAM’ STENCIL PROJECT?
My dream stencil project would be to land a large scale faux finish and a custom ornament assignment such as a theater, church, mosque, castle or gilded era historical mansion. A commission I could pour myself into and focus on for an extended period of time. I’m very meditative while painting and stenciling – studious, focused, content, and peaceful. It’s a great form of exercise mentally, physically, and spiritually. Akin to a form of yoga. I find it tremendously rewarding to spend my time enjoying the creative task at hand, painting day after day, and striving to make our world even more beautiful. Hand in hand with this dream is the opportunity to travel and explore.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE SURFACES TO WORK AND DESIGN FOR?
It’s like asking me ”What is your favorite color?” My response is, “All of them!” Part of the joy of stenciling is the versatility of what you can do. My business began primarily with faux wall finishes and hand-painted furniture. With a lot of hard work, striving, researching and practicing new techniques over the years – my portfolio has blossomed to include surface design techniques for a slew of different interior decor mediums. I use stencils to accent walls, ceilings, floors, countertops, furniture, cabinetry, molding panels, wood, concrete, glass, mirror, and canvas… to name a few. Equipped with this particular skill set and career path, I’ve found the more you do… the better you get.
And we couldn’t agree more with Heather on that! If you like what you see above, believe me when I say it’s only the tip of the iceberg! Heather’s website heatherbrunosears.com showcases several of her projects ranging from gorgeous ornamental details to whimsical kids’ rooms and beautiful custom furniture finishes.
We hope you have enjoyed taking a peek into the world of the very talented Heather Bruno-Sears, our stencil star of the month! Be sure to give us a shout out if you are working on any stenciling projects of your own, we would love to hear from you.
