A Perfect Christmas Gift: Stenciled Wine Rack

A Perfect Christmas Gift: Stenciled Wine Rack DIY | Moorish Fleur de Lis Moroccan stencil by Royal Design Studio

December is here. What? When did that happen? This year, are you too madly creating gifts like me?

I discovered this DIY wood wine rack at Home Depot back in late summer. It was inexpensive and a perfect, fun Christmas gift project for Paint + Pattern. If you belong to a ladies-night-out group this would be great fun to do together. Plus, you get to leave with a finished gift and enjoy a glass of wine while you paint and stencil!

This little project was quite simple, and because this wood is quite soft, it’s a bit rustic. But, if you know my style by now, I stenciled the wine rack and turned it into an absolutely desirable work of art!

STEP ONE

Lightly sand all of the pieces and wipe clean. Paint two coats of Graphite and let dry. Sand all pieces. This will give the wood a worn, dark grey patina.

STEP TWO

Use the small flat brush to paint the edges of the wine rack pieces in Antique Gold. Paint the edges of the two side-pieces with Smoked Oyster.

STEP THREE

Lay the stencil in a pleasing position on the flat side-piece. Dip your stencil brush in Smoked Oyster, off-load excess paint on paper towels, and stencil using a swirling motion. Stencil all sides of the two flat boards. Let dry. Lightly sand. Use a soft, lint-free cloth or wax brush to wax all pieces with Clear Soft Wax. Remove excess wax and buff to a soft sheen.

STEP FOUR

Assemble the wine rack using the hardware included in the kit, following the instructions provided. Have a curious kitty/inspector on hand to oversee the process!

NOTE: One thing I wish I’d thought of when I began the assembly was to pre-drill the holes for the screws so the soft wood would not split. The directions did not include that step.

Now just add a bottle or two of wine, perhaps even pair it with wine glasses tied by a pretty ribbon and your gift is ready for giving!

Christmas décor doesn’t have to come from a store… Maybe it can mean a little bit more. Want some more Christmas-themed DIY fun? Click here to see what others have done!
