When a historic Charleston, SC night spot needed a facelift, they turned to talented designer Jesse Vickers of JLV Creative for help. Mixing and matching bright colors and bold stencil patterns by Royal Design Studio, Jesse and her team turned a glum location in a glam hotspot. Follow along with us as we chat with Jesse about her incredible design transformation using the power of stenciled patterns.
Royal Design Studio stencil patterns mix beautifully at the Priya Lounge in this Moroccan inspired stenciling project.
Jesse Vickers’ design firm tackles residential and commercial projects big and small.
Our team was contacted by an established hookah bar & cocktail lounge in historic Charleston that needed a facelift. They decided that they wanted to entirely renovate the interior and exterior space to give them a more current, relevant look in what is a very competitive food and beverage market.
Jesse realized that there wasn’t much diversity in the Charleston-area restaurants and decided to go with hip Moroccan-inspired stenciled decor for the Priya Lounge to shake things up a bit.
The Palace Trellis Moroccan Stencil pulls extra duty and adorns the lounge ceiling and the front of the bar counters.
The Lisboa Tile Stencil is framed as wall artwork surrounded by the beautiful Palace Trellis Moroccan Stencil pattern.
“We selected a bold color palette featuring a marriage of deep plums, golden yellows, turquoise and a variety of blues, all highlighted by the addition of several metallic by Modern Masters,” Jesse explains. “We gathered inspiration images of fully tiled settings in Morocco as well as beautiful textiles and patterns that appealed to us. We purchased multiple stencils of all sizes from Royal Design Studio and got to work laying out our design.”
The Lisboa Tile Stencil is used again to stencil wall panels in one of the lounge’s vibrantly colored public baths. Stencils are incredibly versatile and can be used time and again on many surfaces.
Jesse and her team (comprised of her production manager, design assistant and two handymen) had a timeline of 3.5 weeks to complete the entire renovation project. “We stenciled all of the walls, the ceiling, valances, the bar face and some seating!” Various stencil methods and tools were used as well. “We did a lot of small foam rollers, stippling sponges and even spray paint on extremely old and porous wood outside where a roller would not work. We sealed everything and filled in pattern as needed by hand painting with a small brush,” Jesse shares.
All the Moroccan inspired stencils and their patterns come together with Moroccan flair on various surfaces in Priya’s alluring exterior patio.
As they neared the finishing line, Jesse popped in colorful silk and beaded pillows, made all the curtains for the space and brought in gorgeous Moroccan lanterns and décor throughout. Working with our stencils, the JLV Creative team has since become HUGE fans. She says, “We’ve used other Royal Design Studio stencils in three additional and totally different commercial spaces. Obviously we’re hooked! We are continually pleased with the quality of their products.” Thank you, Jesse – we’re hooked on your gorgeous design projects, too!
